Jesus was more than a baby . . . he is the Word (logos) of God. John purposely chose this title because of what it meant to the Jews and Greeks he wrote his gospel for. To the Jews, “Word” meant the agent of creation, the message of God (like what the prophets spoke) and God’s law – his standard of holiness. To the Greeks, “Word” meant the source of reason that governed everything in the universe. Put this together and John is saying that Jesus is the Creator of the universe, the ultimate revelation of God, the living picture of God’s holiness and the one who holds everything together. That’s why we say that Jesus was more than a baby!
