John wrote his gospel to persuade people to “believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name” (John 20:30-31). Shortly after writing his gospel John followed up with an “open letter” written to help people know whether they truly believed in Jesus, “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). In short, John’s gospel was written to persuade people about eternal life and John’s letter was written to assure people about eternal life. In his letter John gives three tests that prove someone knows God and has eternal life. Do you know what they are? They are the l________ test, the o_____________ test and the b_________ test. More important, though, do you pass the three tests? God wants you to know whether or not you do – to not doubt, or worry or wonder if you know him and have eternal life. God wants you to know because when you do, it changes everything.
