The small New Testament book of James was written to help early believers know how
to live in a way that was consistent with their beliefs, to connect right living with right
believing. That challenge is still around today. No matter where we are in our journey
with Jesus we need to be regularly reminded that what we believe should be reflected
in what we do.
James emphasizes this truth as he talks about the right way to use our
tongue (speech), the right way to use our wealth, the dangers of pride, slander, favoritism
and hypocrisy. He speaks to us about how we should view trials and difficulties that
come our way and how we can discern true faith from false faith. James is full of
practical, specific, no – nonsense teaching about what it means to follow Jesus and how
our actions should mirror our beliefs.
