Blessing Our Community (11/4/2018)

Jeremiah 29:4–7, Brian Doten:

Everybody knows and loves Jeremiah 29:11, the promise from God about having plans for our life and giving us hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11 is a great promise.  But, while everybody knows and loves Jeremiah 29:11, few people read and pay attention to the verses just before it.  What do they say?  God tells the Jewish exiles living in Babylon to “build homes, plant gardens, marry and have children … work for the prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.”  God told Israel us to pray for and bless the place and people he sent them to live among – that doing so was good for everybody.  That same truth applies to us.  We are God’s people today and God calls us to pray for our community, bless our community and work for it’s prosperity.  That’s possible. That’s doable.  For all of us.
